White and on the ground
The Slow & Painful Walk to Work outfit
They tell you to treat your body like a temple. Consider mine looted by thieves. One sudden snap behind my left knee while doing my church lady exercises has left me with a swollen leg. This year is off to an outstanding start.
At least my limp gives me reason to use my cane and spares me from looking like a hobbling affectation.
Sheep hat
Received several compliments while wearing this on several Zoom calls. I ended up looking at myself on Zoom, wondering if I could’ve pulled off a super tight crop of oatmeal blond curls. I think so.
Johnson Leathers Type 3
If and when you order a custom leather jacket, splurge on a quality zipper. The chunkier the better.
Golden Goose white sneakers
There was a time when I would never consider looking at white sneakers. And then I watched Personal Shopper, and my obsession with Kristen Stewart’s uniform became manifest. Suddenly I was in Antwerp, seeking the perfect hem of every vintage leather bomber, and trying white sneakers (low tops though - I can’t do high tops) with skinny black jeans. I’ve since appreciated the effect a white sneaker can have when paired with leather jackets. What I don’t understand is when people fight to keep their white sneakers pristine. They’re white and on the ground. Why bother?
Chanel Portobello flap bag
I know it’s trendy but I’m tempted to add a charm or two to this guy. Large chunky shapes (pyramid, ball, cylinder), made of bakelite or any synthetic resin, in dull colors.
Hannibal tee
The entire series of Hannibal is currently on sale for like $10. I paid $25 per season. Bah. Gorgeous show, but absurd dialogue as the seasons progress.
Cognomen vest
A joy to wear, but I need to wash it soon. Also, I believe this was by design, but it’s fraying at the edges…
Mel En Stel wrap scarf
Pretty sure I bought this at Crossroads or Wasteland. 100% wool and a joy to wrap and button for the perfect drape. Another favorite workhorse to bring abroad and use on a cold plane.
The Sheep & Checkers outfit
It gets chilly in the office, so a comfy layer is required.
Fau Chao Ji jacket
I have a favorite shop in Camden that I always visit when I’m in London. The shopkeeper is this wonderful lady who lets me try on all the interesting womenswear she sells, and never forgets to shame me for splurging on designer bags. I’m bequeathing one of my Chanel bags to her.
This guy is an odd one. Too cropped, too wide, and the sleeves are so short that I have to push them up. But I love everything about this piece, especially the frayed checker panels and the way it looks when it’s buttoned up (the collar…!). Don’t ask why but the sporty offbeat graphic feel makes me think of Nicolas Ghesquiere.
And it pairs beautifully with the long strings and cropped length of the Cognomen vest.
Ram cane
If Eddie Redmayne can confess to having a crush on Nala from The Lion King, I’ve no shame in admitting I imagined being married to Skeletor from He-Man. He had henchmen, wore a cool hood, lived in a big house, and possessed a magic staff with a ram’s head on it.
This isn’t as big as Skeletor’s but it does the trick.
Henrik Vibskov socks
When Chick Lit and I were shopping in Soho, we wound up waiting out a serious downpour in the Henrik Vibskov shop. I’m glad it rained, otherwise I wouldn’t have bought these socks. The pattern looks particularly amazing when worn with cropped pants and the Isabel Marant sneakers (and running around Tokyo).
